Newberg is situated in Oregon's north Willamette Valley and features some of the region's most acclaimed wineries. And many are less than an hour's drive from Portland. Our Newberg wineries guide explores our favorite places in the area to experience wine tastings.

Newberg Wineries Region
The city of Newberg, Oregon is located about 25 miles south of Portland in the heart of the Willamette Valley. It's nestled among three separate AVAs (American Viticultural Area): Chehalem Mountains, Laurelwood, and Ribbon Ridge, that are home to dozens of wineries. These AVAs cover more than 62,000 acres, with roughly 2,600 of them planted.

The region produces distinctive wines thanks to its diverse combination of marine, volcanic, and windblown sediments, areas of high terrain, and unique climate.
The most common grape varieties include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. But Gamay Noir wines are increasingly being produced here.
In this guide, we'll explore our favorite Newberg wineries, complete with tasting notes and tasting room information for wine enthusiasts and beginners alike.

About this wine tasting guide
This guide will be updated when new information is available, but please do visit each winery's website for the absolute latest wine tasting reservation details. As we know, things are changing extra fast these days.
All of the wineries featured here are ones that Alain and I have personally visited and enjoyed. We've been wine tasting in the Willamette Valley for more than two decades. That includes quite a few stops in the Newberg area :)
Thank you for supporting these Oregon wineries!
Adelsheim Vineyard

Founded in 1978, Adelsheim was the first winery established in the Chehalem Mountains. But its roots go back even further. Owners David and Ginny Adelsheim bought their first few acres of land in the area in the early 1970s, where they began growing a handful of rows of Pinot Noir.
As one of the Willamette Valley's "founding families" of winemakers, they not only helped the region become recognized for producing world-class wines, they also have been named a Wine & Spirits Top 100 Winery seven times.

This LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology) certified sustainable winery focuses on making award-winning Pinot Noirs, ranging in price from $35 to $300. But you'll also find Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and some sparkling wines on their menu.
When the weather is nice, we love enjoying Adelsheim's wines on their outdoor deck, while soaking up their vineyard views -- some of the most beautiful grounds in the Willamette Valley. Below are several experiences to enjoy some of their great wines.

Anderson Family Vineyard

For over three decades, owner Cliff Anderson and his family have been making wines in this hilltop vineyard property that features great views of Newberg. The steep slopes and ancient soil help produce some of the area's best wines.
Cliff and his team focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wine grapes, plus a small run of Pinot Gris each year, with all the vines organically farmed. The tasting experience at the winery is usually given by Cliff himself or his wife Allison, so you get a great sense of their winemaking process.
During the tasting, you're treated to a vertical sample of their signature Pinots, dating back to 2014. And these wines are special. Even the Pinot Gris is some of the finest we've tasted among Newberg wineries.
Wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris

Bells Up Winery

Owners Sara and Dave Specter are some of the best people in the Oregon wine business. And Bells Up Winery may offer the most personal wine tasting experience in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.
We love the tastings here, where you get to sit with winemaker Dave, ask questions, and just relax and enjoy the vineyard views. In fact, they only offer four private tasting times a day, each guided by Dave himself.
When it comes to their wines, the 2014 Titan Pinot Noir ($85), a bright, fresh red, is a favorite of ours. We also love their Prelude Rosé with notes of strawberry, watermelon, and tangerine, as well as the Firebird Syrah, a full-bodied intense wine with black cherry and nutmeg flavors.

Chehalem Winery

Founded in 1990, Chehalem Winery first started growing grapes on its Ridgecrest vineyard, which centered on Pinot Noir. A few years later, Bill Stoller of Stoller Winery in Dayton, Oregon joined the team as co-owner. By 2018, Stoller became sole owner and folded the Chehalem brand under the Stoller umbrella.
With a focus on sustainability, their vineyards are LIVE and Salmon Safe certified and they don't use herbicides.
Known for single-vineyard Pinot Noirs and crisp Chardonnays, Chehalem wines run the gamut from softly elegant to more tannic, depending on the vineyard and vintage. The best way to get a feel for their range of styles is to visit their Newberg wine tasting room.
For a good everyday wine, try the 2019 Chehalem Mountains Pinot Noir ($30), with bold notes of cherry and cranberry. For something a bit more complex, go for the 2018 Chehalem Reserve Pinot Noir ($70), featuring elegant tannins and slightly smoky flavors.

Domaine Divio

Domaine Divio is co-owned by winemaker Bruno Corneaux, a fourth-generation grape grower from Burgundy, and co-André Weil. The pair met in Dijon, France 30 years ago.
They planted their first vines on the Newberg property in 2015 and it consists of 11 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. And their sustainable vineyards forgo irrigation or artificial chemicals.
Their chardonnay is typically oaky and buttery with hints of citrus and toasted hazelnuts. They also produce a rosé that is ideal for sipping on warm summer days.
Domaine Divio offers several Pinot Noirs, but our favorite is the Chehalem Mountain Pinot Noir ($55). It's fuller-bodied compared to many other Oregon pinots, but it's smooth with strong notes of ripe cherry.
You'll find their tasting room spacious and inviting, and there's also plenty of outdoor space with an expansive patio, making it the perfect place to enjoy a tasting or glass of wine on a warm summer day.

Et Fille

We just LOVE Et Fille wines. Great people who make amazing wines.
Et Fille is French for “and daughter,” so it's only fitting that the co-founders behind this winery were the father-daughter team of Howard and Jessica Mozeico. They established it in 2003 and now Jessica leads operations by creating elegant wines inspired by her late father's legacy.
Pinot Noir is the focus at Et Fille and it shows. They're somehow complex, inviting, and approachable all at once. They also produce a fantastic Méthode Champenoise (or traditional method) sparkling wine. This boutique winery's tasting room located in the heart of downtown Newberg is well worth the visit :)

Hazelfern

Every so often, Marlynn and I will muse about having our own vineyard and winery. Then we look at the hard work that goes into operating a gorgeous place like Hazerfern and we're like, "Maybe we'll just stick to drinking other people's wine for now..."
Owners Bryan and Laura Laing opened Hazelfern after buying a farm in the Chehalem Mountains in 2014 -- referring to the move as a "quarter-life crisis." They soon got to work building a winery and idyllic tasting room, located in a former barn.
They also began work on producing some of the Willamette Valley's tastiest wines. As with many other wineries in the region, Hazelfern specializes in Pinot Noir. The 2019 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir ($39), with complex flavors of strawberry, currants, and vanilla is a great value.
But here's a little secret. They also produce what we think are some of the best Rosé in the Valley. We've been enjoying them for several years and are always thrilled when a new vintage is released. The current one on offer is the 2020 Rosé of Pinot Noir ($29), a fruity, approachable wine with hints of peaches and persimmons.

And when it comes to Hazelfern, Rosé is not just a summer wine. No, no. In autumn, they release a Winter Rosé(!), designed to be enjoyed with fall and winter dishes. It usually drops in late November and sells for under $30.
If you'd like to taste some, be sure to make a reservation. During the winter, tastings at Hazelfern are by appointment only.
Wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Syrah, Rosé
Wine tasting experience:
Wine flight: $35 per person, 6 guests max. (fee waived with a 3-bottle purchase)

By appointment only during the winter

Rain Dance Vineyards

If your idea of wine tasting includes llamas and an artisan shop, then you may want to add Rain Dance Vineyards to your next Oregon wine country itinerary.
Llamas Oscar and Bonzi are part of the winery greeting committee. They're so friendly and you can feed them some food pellets too -- perfect for getting the kiddos to immediately feel comfortable at the winery.
But the wine is center stage here, and a big red barn features a gorgeous and inviting the tasting room - with plenty of seating options inside and outside on the patio.

Owners Ken and Celia Austin are fifth generation Newberg residents. The family built the Allison Inn & Spa in 2008 and in 2009 they purchased a former Christmas tree farm and planted their first few acres of grapes.
They released their first Rain Dance vintage in 2015, a Pinot Noir. Since then, they have also produced Chardonnay, Gewürtztraminer, Rose, and Riesling, among others.
When planning a visit to Rain Dance Vineyards, I recommend setting aside time to truly enjoy the full experience. This is not a quick stop in-between two other wineries kind of tasting room. This is a place you'll want to bring friends & family, pack a picnic, open up a bottle of your favorite wine after doing a tasting, and soaking up the wine country views
Wines: Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling
Wine tasting experiences (reservations required):
- Estate Wine Tasting (Limited-production red and white wines - $30)

Raptor Ridge Winery

Owner Scott Shull, an engineer-turned-self-taught-winemaker started Raptor Ridge Winery in 1995. Over the years, he expanded his vine plantings in the Chehalem Mountains. Now the beautiful vineyards total about 20 acres, about 18 of which consist of active vines.
Grape varieties include Pommard and Grüner Veltliner. But Pinot Noir wine is the focus, such as their Estate Pinot Noir ($50) and Estate Whole Cluster ($50). They also make several single vineyard wines sourced from select sites such as Meredith Mitchell ($45).
If you're looking for something a bit different, try the Auxerrois ($35), a varietal from eastern France, similar to a Pinot Blanc. It's a bright white wine with notes of Asian pear and spices.
Wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Tempranillo
Wine tasting experience:
- Wine flight: $30 per person (waived with $50 purchase). Reservationsrecommended

Roco Winery

Quite simply, Roco is one of the top wineries in the Newberg area, and in all of the Willamette Valley. Their wines are that good!
Having worked in the Oregon wine industry since the 1980s, Roco owners Rollin Soles and Corby Stonebraker-Soles are local wine pioneers. And over the course of roughly four decades, they've honed their craft to produce some of the region's most incredible wines.
Visit their unassuming yet inviting Newberg tasting room and you'll be treated to a cozy, personal experience in a relaxing atmosphere where you can take your time enjoying many of the wines Roco has to offer.

We stopped by earlier this year and sampled several Pinot Noirs. Some of our favorites: the 2019 Marsh Estate Pinot Noir ($60), an acidic red with cherry, peppercorn, and vanilla flavors and the 2014 Private Stash Pinot Noir (call Roco for pricing), intense and velvety with notes of black currants and anise.
For something truly unique, try the 2020 RMS Red Brut ($50). This inaugural Sparkling Red Wine Pinot Noir is dark in color and lively on the palate, with aromas of cranberry, black raspberry, and pecans. This makes a great holiday season wine but can be enjoyed year round!
Wines: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Red Brut
Wine tasting experience:
Wine flight: $25 per person (complimentary for wine club members)
Max. 8 guests. Reservations required
Wine tasting hours:
Daily 10am - 4pm
