Hash browns are so versatile for breakfast. Homemade hash browns are easy to make from scratch with a box grater and some russet potatoes, but it’s even easier to grab a bag of frozen hash browns and get the day moving.

We always have a bag of frozen hash browns in the freezer for those mornings when we need a fast and easy breakfast recipe or side dish that’s also hearty and super satisfying.

And one of my favorite ways to cook frozen hash browns is in the air fryer!

🌟 Why use the air fryer to cook hash browns?

Here are a few reasons cooking frozen hash browns in the air fryer is my favorite way to make them:

  • You can cook them from frozen shredded potatoes. No need to thaw before cooking!
  • It’s a tad healthier. Now, hash browns are still not a health food item, but you do use considerably less cooking oil when air frying compared to deep frying or frying on the stovetop.
  • Easy clean up. The Ninja Foodi dual zone air fryer that we have is SUPER easy to clean. You don’t have to worry about cleaning up oil splatters with an air fryer, as you do when you fry on the stove.
  • The air fryer is and easy way to make super crispy hash browns in just a few simple steps (again, with less oil). Just the way they should be!
  • Cooking time is just 12 minutes!

🥔 Ingredient notes

This recipe requires just a few simple ingredients.

ingredients to make shredded air fryer hash browns

Frozen hash browns – Use frozen shredded hash browns that come in a 20 ounce package. You’ll find them in the breakfast section of your local grocer’s freezer aisle.

Seasonings – kosher salt, ground black pepper, ground paprika. You can, of course, leave the ground paprika out. But my family loves the added flavor of paprika to many air fried foods (check out our popular Air Fryer Paprika Chicken post for one of our faves!)

✅ Step-by-step instructions:

Here’s how to make golden brown air fryer hash browns (for full details on the cooking process, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post).

1. First, preheat air fryer at 390°F while you prep the hash browns.

2. In a large bowl, combine the shredded hash browns, salt, pepper, and paprika. Toss together until well mixed.

3. Spray the air fryer basket or trays with non-aerosol cooking spray (I use olive oil spray, but you could also use avocado oil spray), then for best results, place the seasoned shredded hash browns into a single layer. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to work in batches.

4. Air fry at 390°F for 10 to 12 minutes, until the hash browns reach your desired level of crispness, shaking the basket or flipping the hash browns over at the halfway point. Then enjoy your delicious hash browns!

❓ Air Fryer Breakfast Recipe FAQs

Can I use parchment paper in the air fryer?

Yes! Just be sure to cover the parchment evenly with the hash browns. Otherwise, the paper that isn’t covered by food may fly up and get torched a bit.

How do I store leftover hash browns?

Allow the hash browns to cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days.

How do I reheat leftover hash browns in the air fryer?

To reheat, place the hash browns in the air fryer basket or trays in an even layer and reheat at 350°F for about 5 minutes, just until the hash browns are heated through again. I usually spray a little oil below and on the tops of the hashbrowns.

This air fryer hash browns recipe is super flexible. Even before you air fry hash browns, you can customize the flavor to your personal preference by mixing in different seasonings. Try this homemade Cajun seasoning, homemade BBQ rub, or homemade Fajita seasoning for something a little different!

You can use any standard size air fryer to make this recipe. I use my Ninja Foodi 10-quart Dual Zone Air Fryer, which I LOVE because it’s so easy to clean and air fries quickly. But you can use any 6-quart or 8-quart basket-style air fryer or tray-style air fryer.

Notes

Air Fryers: every air fryer is different, and you may need to adjust the cooking time depending on your air fryer. This recipe has been tested using the Ninja Foodi 10-quart Dual Zone Air Fryer
Cooking spray: With air fryers, you should use a non-aerosol spray; the aerosol sprays like classic PAM spray contain harmful chemicals that can break down the non-stick materials of your air fryer. Use a non-aerosol avocado oil spray, grapeseed oil spray, or even olive oil spray (at temps below 425°F).
Storage: Allow leftover hash browns to cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days.
Reheating hash browns: Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 4 to 5 minutes, until the hash browns are warm and crisp again.
