What is Cajun seasoning?
Cajun seasoning originally comes from Louisiana. It's a rustic blend of spices that is often used as seasoning for many of the South's signature dishes.
Kitchen tools and equipment
For this recipe, you just really just need three basic kitchen tools:
- Mixing bowl
- Mason jar or other storage container
Ingredients to make cajun seasoning
Paprika - description of what it is/how it is used with affiliate link where possible
Garlic powder & onion powder- description of what it is/how it is used with affiliate link where possible
Dried herbs - You'll need dried thyme and oregano
Salt & pepper - Use kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Whisk all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Store in an airtight container, such as a mason jar, in a cool, dark, dry place like a pantry or spice drawer for up to 3 months.
In general, Cajun cooking is more rustic, comforting, home cooking-style food. And Creole cooking tends to be more sophisticated "city" style cooking, with influences from other countries such as Africa, Spain, Germany, and Italy, combined with local ingredients.
It can be, but it doesn't have to be! One of the best things about making your own Cajun seasoning from scratch is that you can control how much heat is in it.
Store your homemade Cajun seasoning in a mason jar or other airtight glass container in a cool, dark, dry place, such as a pantry or spice drawer.
The main difference is that Creole seasoning contains more herbs and Cajun seasoning has more of an emphasis on the ground black pepper, paprika and often includes white pepper (ours does not).
