Québec City and the surrounding countryside are a feast for the senses.

If you’re craving cozy French-Canadian classics, seasonal local produce, rich culinary traditions, and some of the province’s best wines and ciders, this region has it all.

Whether you're wandering through the cobblestone streets of Old Québec or crossing the bridge to the rolling farmland of Île d'Orléans, you're in for a deliciously immersive experience.

I fell in love with Québec cuisine during a recent TBEX conference in Québec City. Now I'm so excited to share this delicious journey through some of the best food and drink experiences in Québec City and Île d'Orléans!

About the Quebec City food scene

    basket of Quebec strawberries.

The heart of Québec cuisine is deeply rooted in its French heritage. It's shaped by the area's long winters and agricultural bounty.

Québec City is known for classic Québécois comfort food. Think rustic, hearty, wildly satisfying food.

You'll find dishes like tourtière (meat pie), poutine, cretons (a pork spread), pea soup, pouding chômeur (a maple syrup dessert), and anything made with local maple syrup.

The region is known for its sweet strawberries (some of the best I have ever tasted!), crisp apples, tart black currants (cassis), maple syrup, corn, and fresh herbs.

In the summer and fall, roadside stands and island farms overflow with vibrant seasonal produce. The local cuisine leans into what’s grown nearby; this hotspot was all about farm-to-table before it was trendy.

Here's a look at what I ate while visiting Québec City.

    Chez Maude - Québec City

cup of coffee and a plate of stuffed waffle at Chez Maude in Quebec City.

Right in the heart of Québec City’s Saint-Roch neighborhood, Chez Maude is like the coolest neighborhood café. It's warm, cozy, and full of good, chill vibes.

Here you'll find local artisan goods and locally grown produce for sale, including local cheeses, snacks, beers, and wines.

The menu highlights food made with locally grown ingredients as well. There's plenty of comforting brunch favorites made with local ingredients, like stuffed waffle sandwiches. You'll also find seasonal quiches and fresh salads.

The coffee is strong, the pastries are flaky, and the vibe is perfect for lingering over a slow morning or catching up with friends. Whether you're in for a quick espresso or a leisurely meal, Chez Maude hits that sweet spot between cozy and cool.

    Cassis Monna & Filles - Île d’Orléans

four wine bottles with colorful labels.

Black currant royalty, right this way. Cassis Monna & Filles is truly a food & wine lover's destination.

With sweeping views of the St. Lawrence River, this family-run spot transforms tart cassis berries into liqueurs, syrups, mustards, jams, gelato, and sparkling beverages.

Their on-site restaurant and ice cream bar serve wildly inventive treats like goat cheese and cassis ice cream, duck confit poutine with cassis gravy, and cocktails featuring their signature crème de cassis.

It’s whimsical, elegant, and incredibly tasty. Don't forget to buy a few cassis jams and butters, as well as a bottle or two of their wines, to take home!

    La Buche - Quebec City

Oreilles de Crisse with pickled veggies on a white platter at La Buche restaurant in Quebec City.
Marlynn Jayme Schotland holding a maple toffee at La Buche in Quebec City.

Step into La Bûche and you’re instantly wrapped in a warm, woodsy embrace.

This rustic-chic cabin serves up traditional Québécois comfort food with a fun, modern twist in a cozy, casual atmosphere.

Get the Oreilles de Crisse to start. This is a classic dish of deep fried smoked pork rinds. At La Buche, they serve it with pickled beets and

For dessert, you can't leave Quebec without trying the maple toffee or sugar pie.

The log cabin aesthetic, friendly vibe, and unapologetically hearty menu make this a must-stop for anyone wanting the real Québec food experience with a side of fun.

    Chez Mag - Île d’Orléans

six sets of lobster rolls at Chez Mag in Quebec.

One of the stops I was most excited to visit was Chez Mag -- and it did not disppoint!

This is a roadside casse-croûte that delivers classic Quebec summer eats. Enjoy poutine with squeaky curds, buttery lobster rolls, and crispy fries. End with a twisty cone of maple or vanilla soft-serve to finish.

Simple, nostalgic, and exactly what you want after a day of cycling or farm-hopping around Île d’Orléans.

    Vignoble Ste-Pétronille – Île d’Orléans

    pizza at Vignoble Ste-Pétronille.
hand holding a glass of rose wine up against a vineyard.

This winery is pure magic. Overlooking Montmorency Falls and just a stone’s throw from Québec City, Vignoble Ste-Pétronille is known for its crisp white wines, elegant rosés, and refined cool-climate reds. Their onsite restaurant, Panache Mobile, is a food truck that churns out gourmet fare like smoked trout rillettes, duck burgers, and tomato tartlets—perfect for pairing with a chilled glass of their award-winning cuvées. Grab a seat on the patio surrounded by vines and soak in the view.

La Souche – Stoneham & Limoilou, Québec City

tray of beers at La Souche in Quebec City.

Beer lovers, rejoice. La Souche is a lively craft brewery with locations in both Stoneham and Limoilou, serving creative, small-batch beers that reflect local flavors. You’ll find brews infused with spruce tips, berries, and even Québec honey. The food is equally local and thoughtful—cheesy poutines, smoked meats, maple-glazed wings, and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread. Bonus points for the playful names and vibrant pub atmosphere.

Vieux Carré – Old Québec City

bartender pouring drinks into wine glasses at a bar.

Set in a cozy corner of Old Québec, Vieux Carré is part wine bar, part culinary hideaway. It’s intimate, refined, and known for curating an exceptional wine list focused on small producers from Québec and abroad. The menu rotates seasonally but often includes charcuterie, oysters, duck confit, and local cheeses, beautifully plated and full of texture. It's the kind of spot where you go for a glass and stay for the entire bottle (and maybe dessert).

Restaurant Tanière³ – Old Québec City

This is where storytelling meets fine dining.

Tanière³ is a 2-Michelin star restaurant with an impressive subterranean tasting menu experience tucked beneath the historic streets of Old Québec.

Every bite feels like a discovery—wild-foraged mushrooms, sea urchin, Quebec lamb, fermented vegetables, ice wine-infused sorbet, and more—all artfully plated with dramatic flair.

The multi-course journey celebrates Québec’s culinary heritage, indigenous ingredients, and avant-garde techniques.

    It’s intimate, theatrical, and unforgettable.

    Quebec City FAQs

    basket of Quebec strawberries.
Is the food in Québec City influenced by French cuisine?

Yes! Québec cuisine is heavily influenced by French culinary traditions, but with a rustic, local twist. You’ll find rich sauces, slow-cooked meats, pâtés, cheeses, and pastries alongside wild game, foraged mushrooms, and native berries.

What are classic Quebec dishes that I should order?

Poutine, maple toffee, Oreilles de Crisse.

What is the tipping etiquette in Quebec City?

A 15% to 20% tip before tax is standard. Locals often round up to 18% or 20% for good service.

What's the best time of year to visit?

I think it's always a good time to visit Quebec City. But if you're a foodie, try visiting in late summer to early fall (August-October). This time of year is Québec’s harvest season, when markets and restaurant menus burst with local produce like apples, berries, tomatoes, corn, squash, and fresh herbs. Plus, the fall foliage is stunning!
