Searching for a Portland brunch spot? Screen Door restaurant has long been one of Portland, Oregon's favorite brunch restaurants. Now open with two locations for brunch and dinner, as well as pick-up and delivery options, you can enjoy Screen Door's delicious Southern food more than ever!
Mention "brunch" in Portland, Oregon, and you'll likely get several recommendations that include Screen Door restaurant.
Opened in 2006 by Nicole and David Mouton after they moved to Portland from Louisiana, Screen Door offers southern food featuring Pacific Northwest bounty.
The original location in Northeast Portland is arguably one of the busiest brunch spots in town. Before they began taking reservations in 2021, you could put your name on a waitlist – but that still often meant waiting an hour to an hour and a half to be seated.
In 2020, a second location in the Pearl District in Northwest Portland opened up. And, Screen Door began accepting reservations. Two additions to this popular Portland brunch spot that makes us VERY happy!
Restaurant Vibe
The original location is very Portland: smaller, intimate, darker, low-key, and cozy.
The Pearl District location is very, well, Pearl District: lighter, brighter, lots of space to move between the tables. In its decor and architecture, it's more modern than the Northeast location while still retaining a comfy, cozy Southern restaurant feel.
I'm in LOVE with the Pearl District location.
The Food
Screen Door serves all the greatest hits from Southern cuisine classics. They are open for brunch and dinner. For this post, we're going to focus on brunch.
NOTE: since we last visited during a time when we were mostly ordering take-out, these photos were taken in our photography studio. They were taken immediately upon returning with our take-out, so the food is accurately depicted as it might be if you order take-out.
Starters include Crispy Fried Okra ($8.50), Praline Bacon ($10), and Cream Cheese Cinnamon Rolls ($9/2 rolls).
For many years, Screen Door restaurant has arguably made one of the city's favorite fried chicken. You can get their fried chicken in many forms, including Chicken Tenders ($10) as a starter or a side; their classic Chicken & Waffles (prices vary depending on # of chicken); or in the Fried Chicken and Biscuits ($15.50).
But my personal favorite is their Fried Chicken Sandwich ($16). Buttermilk-battered chicken is fried to crispy perfection with mayo and pickles on a toasted bun. It's served with shoestring fries and coleslaw.
Another favorite brunch dish is Screen Door's Lowcountry Shrimp and Grits ($15.50). You get four Gulf shrimp in a tomato-garlic sauce served over cheddar grits. It's SO good!
The Screen Door Breakfast Sandwich ($15.50) is everything you want in and with a breakfast sandwich. It's a breakfast sausage with hashbrown, American cheese, egg on an English muffin served with homefries.
I love that you can also order a variety of sides to complete your meal. Everything from a side of biscuits to smoked bacon to a side of eggs.
Don't Forget Dessert!
Whether you are here for brunch or dinner, definitely check out the desserts at Screen Door restaurant. If you're craving good ol' Southern desserts, you will find some of the best here. Choose from Southern faves like Creole Pecan Pie, Banoffee Pie, or Red Velvet Cake. Each dessert is $9.50.
Dinner at Screen Door restaurant
Honestly, whether I go to Screen Door for brunch or dinner, I usually want their fried chicken. During dinner hours, you'll find a Fried Chicken Dinner ($20) as well as the Chicken and Waffles that is also on the Brunch menu.
For dinner, you'll also find more substantial Southern dishes like Seafood Jambalaya ($27), Seared Pork Shoulder ($21), and a Rib Eye Steak ($35).
What I really love about the dinner menu at Screen Door is the wide variety of healthier salads featuring local organic produce. The salad menu includes an Apple Salad, Roast Beet Salad, and Roasted Carrots and Delicata Squash - each for $9.50.
NOTE: As with most restaurants, some menu items are seasonal and some ingredients may change depending on what is available at the time of your visit. Menu items may also vary depending on location.
