About Baja Tacos

If you’ve dined in almost any Mexican restaurant in the United States or Europe, you’ve most likely seen the term “Baja tacos.” This taco style is named after the Baja California Sur state of Mexico, where Los Cabos (including the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) is located.
Baja tacos have a few distinct differences compared to general Mexican tacos:
- Baja tacos use corn tortillas, and never flour tortillas.
- These tacos feature a white fish lightly battered and fried.
- Restaurants in the region always serve Baja tacos with a variety of house-made salsas, ranging from mild to spicy.
- Most Baja tacos do not traditionally include lettuce or cheese, although most restaurants offer those options.
- They are often served topped with shredded cabbage and with a side of lime.
- Shrimp is often an alternative to fish used in Baja tacos.
The best tacos in Cabo San Lucas

Some of the best tacos we enjoyed in Mexico were traditional Baja tacos, but we also enjoyed a variety of other types of tacos as well.
Here’s a look at what Alain and I consider to be some of the best tacos in Cabo San Lucas!
Mother Flower

Hands down, our favorite tacos in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico were the ones at Mother Flower restaurant. Located in the heart of downtown Cabo, Mother Flower is a small and cozy restaurant with high tables and an open kitchen.
We tried one of each of the tacos offered on their menu. Pictured above is one of each taco, plus two of the fish tacos (because we each wanted our own!).
Both of us agreed that the fish tacos, in the traditional Baja taco style, were our favorite tacos of the entire trip. These were topped with white sauce, árbol salsa, cabbage, and pico de gallo, and served with an additional salsa.
Our second favorite were the shrimp tacos (pictured above next to the fish tacos). These were coated with a flavorful dry rub and served with chipotle sauce, pico de gallo, and a side of tangy seafood sauce.
We enjoyed the three meat tacos as well: the carne asada, pork carnitas, and pollo asado. Each of those were served with guacamole, cheese, árbol salsa, onion, and cilantro. But the seafood tacos were our absolute favorite.
Another thing to love about Mother Flower: each taco is only $90 MXN ($5.20 USD) each!
Metate

Metate is a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant located a few minutes outside of Cabo San Lucas city center. It was one of our favorite meals overall, but the Baja Tacos at Metate really stood out.
These tacos have a slightly crunchy base of blue corn tortilla and yellow corn tortilla. The white fish is coated with a squid-ink batter, giving it that unique dark appearance. It’s topped with shredded and pickled red cabbage, cilantro leaves, and dollops of avocado crema. These were SO good!
Juan More Taco Food Tour

We can’t talk about tacos in Cabo San Lucas without mentioning the Juan More Taco food tours. Food tours are an amazing way to get to know the history and cuisine of a destination, and if you go early in your travels, it’s also a great way to get a lay of the land as well as recommendations from locals.
Every food tour is different, but one thing is for certain: you’re going to enjoy a LOT of delicious Mexican food on these tours! During our tour, we enjoyed tacos at Mercabo Gourmet Food, Taqueria Morelos, Los Tacos May, and El Paisa.
What we loved is that these are smaller, mostly family-owned businesses that locals dine at. While you can visit each taco spot on your own individually, I highly recommend joining a tour. You’ll get insider info about the restaurants, the ingredients they use, and really get a better understanding of the food you are eating and see how it’s prepared up close.
While we enjoyed most of the tacos on our tour, the Marlin taco and the shrimp taco that we started our tour with were our favorites (the bottom two photos above).
Marlynn’s Tip
Book a food tour in Cabo
We LOVED our food tour! You can book the same Cabo San Lucas food tour that we did. It currently costs around $90 USD per person. The guides are so fun, funny, educational and informative, and super friendly. You’re sure to have a great tour, learn a lot, and eat some delicious Mexican food!
La Lupita

We can’t talk about tacos in Cabo San Lucas without mentioning La Lupita. There are two locations: one in Cabo San Lucas and one in San Jose del Cabo.
While these restaurants do seem to cater more to tourists, they offer a fun vibe and tasty tacos.
During our visit, we ordered the El Takeshi (rib eye) taco, Santo Pastor (pork) taco, a Camaron Enchipotlado (shrimp) taco, a Taco Güero (shrimp tempura), and the Pork Belly taco.
Both of the shrimp tacos were my favorite! Bottom line: you can’t go wrong with seafood tacos in Cabo!
Baja Taco FAQs
Like everywhere else in the world, the price of tacos vary in Cabo. Smaller taco spots, especially those that have more of a local clientele, offer tacos anywhere from $35 MXN (about $2 USD) on up. High end fine dining restaurants seem to offer tacos in the $250 MXN ($14 USD) range on up.
Yes. In general, leave a 10-15% tip for average service and a 15-20% tip for excellent service. While many restaurants do take American Dollars, I recommend tipping in Mexican Pesos.
While the Mexican Peso is the official currency in Los Cabos, most restaurants in the tourist areas of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo take credit cards and American dollars. Be sure to inquire ahead of time before you dine to make sure you have an acceptable payment form for each restaurants.
In general, you may find the following toppings and sauces: shredded cabbage or pickled cabbage, cilantro white sauce or Chipotle mayo, pico de gallo & avocado, mango pico de gallo or mango slaw, queso dip, and a lime wedge or two.
