🛒 Ingredient notes

sliced French bread, parmesan cheese, parsley, butter, and garlic to make garlic bread.

Bread – I’ve found that French bread is the best bread for garlic bread. It’s soft and pillowy on the inside with a nice crust. You can either buy a whole French loaf and slice it, or buy sliced bread. It also gives you nicely sized garlic bread pieces.

You can also use a French baguette, which will give you smaller slices, or an Italian bread like Ciabatta. Really, you can use almost any bread for this recipe!

Butter – For the best results, use unsalted butter that is softened at room temperature. This means taking the butter out of the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before you are ready to make the garlic bread. It’s soft enough that when you press into the butter with a finger it easily leaves an indentation. See our FAQ section below for ways to soften butter.

Herbs and aromatics – All this bread needs is some minced fresh garlic and fresh parsley to add the best flavor. You can also use Italian seasoning if you’d like.

Cheese – You can use grated parmesan cheese or your favorite dairy-free parmesan.

Optional: If you want super cheesy bread, air fry according to the directions below. Then add shredded mozzarella cheese on top and air fry time for a second time for 30 seconds to one minute. Add just enough cheese to cover the top in a thin layer — don’t overdo it or the cheese can burn.

✅ Step-by-step instructions

Full instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but here’s a quick visual step-by-step guide for making the best garlic bread.

If you would like, you can lightly spray some olive oil onto the air fryer basket or tray, but I have found it’s usually not necessary.

If you have a whole loaf of bread, be sure to slice it into thick slices first. One loaf of French bread usually yields about 8 slices.

  1. In a small or medium bowl, mix together the softened butter, parmesan, chopped parsley, and minced garlic until everything is well mixed.

2. Spread the garlic butter mixture over one side of each slice of bread.

3. Place slices in a single layer in an air fryer basket or tray, then air fry at 350°F for 2-3 minutes, just until the edges are golden brown.

What’s the best type of bread for garlic bread?

French bread is best, but you can also use a baguette, Ciabatta bread, or almost any thick bread for this recipe.

How long do I need to air fry garlic bread?

This simple recipe has a base cook time of 2-3 minutes. Because every air fryer is different, some will cook faster than others. Start with 2-3 minutes, and if the bread is not done to your liking, air fry again for 2-3 more minutes. Be sure to check the bread in 30-second increments because it can go from lightly toasted to burnt fairly quickly!

What’s the best way to store leftover bread?

This bread is best eaten right after it’s air fried, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for about 3-4 days. Be sure to let the bread cool at room temperature before storing.

What can I make with leftover and day-old garlic bread?

Buttery garlic bread that’s a day or two old makes the best croutons and breadcrumbs!

Bread: You can substitute the French bread with baguette or ciabatta bread.

Cheese: If you want to add even more cheese on top, air fry according to the directions below, then add it and air fry time for a second time for 30 seconds to one minute. Add just enough cheese to cover the top in a thin layer — don’t overdo it or the cheese can burn.
Storage: garlic bread is best served warm immediately after it’s made. However, you can place the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days.
To reheat: place a slice or two in the air fryer basket or tray and air fry at 350°F for 1 minute, or until reheated to your preference.
