Triple Berry Chia Whole30 Smoothie on UrbanBlissLife.com

If you follow this blog often or follow my Instagram stories, you know that the kids and I adore smoothies. We make them almost every day in our house!

We love Strawberry Orange Smoothies, Green Smoothies, Mango Carrot Smoothies... it's such a fun and delicious way to start each day. It's also a great way to make sure my kids are getting their servings of fruits and veggies in!

Recently, I've been playing around with layering smoothies, and today I'm excited to share with you one of our new faves: Triple Berry Chia Whole30 Smoothies with blue spirulina!

    Triple Berry Chia Whole30 Smoothie

    Triple Berry Chia Smoothies

These start with one of our longtime tried & true smoothie bases: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, blended with water, lemon juice, and ginger.

I add fresh ginger to almost all of our smoothies. I love the little bit of flavorful zing it adds to smoothies, plus it's packed with anti-inflammatory properties, helps boost the immune system, and has so many more health benefits. If you don't like the flavor of ginger, you can certainly leave it out.

I also add in a healthy dose of chia seeds to these smoothies. Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and they provide fiber, iron, and calcium. Plus, I love the little bits of crunch they add to smoothies, although you could certainly use a high powered blender to blend them more into the smoothie.

    Triple Berry Chia Smoothies

The top layer is a simple mixture of dairy-free yogurt and blue spirulina powder. I use dairy-free, plant-based vanilla yogurt with no added sugars, but you can use any plain or vanilla yogurt you like. Just remember that if you use regular cow's milk yogurt, then this smoothie is no longer paleo or Whole30 compliant.

The blue spirulina powder is from Unicorn Superfoods. Check out their Instagram account for gorgeous, colorful superfood inspiration!

You may have seen blue spirulina making more of an appearance these days. If you're not familiar with blue spirulina, it's basically a blue pigment derived from blue-green algae. This superfood is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage. It can help increase energy and metabolism, as well as aid in digestion and help boost the immune system.

    Triple Berry Chia Smoothies

A little blue spirulina powder goes a long way; I used a teaspoon in this recipe.

You could mix all of the smoothie ingredients together, but I just love the layered look. Then you can always top it with more berries or edible flowers.

Who says breakfast has to be boring, right? These Triple Berry Chia  Whole30 Smoothies will perk you right up and help you start the day right!

    Ingredients

    Triple Berry Smoothie Layer

    • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
    • ½ cup blackberries, fresh or frozen
    • ½ cup raspberries, fresh or frozen
    • ½" slice ginger, peeled
    • ½ tbsp chia seeds
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • water use as much as needed to blend smoothly

    Blue Spirulina Yogurt Layer

    • 6-8 oz plant-based plain or vanilla yogurt
    • 1 tsp blue spirulina powder
    • optional garnish: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, edible flowers

    Instructions

    • Blend ingredients for triple berry smoothie layer together in a high powered blender until well blended. I start out with a half cup of water, and then add more as needed for the ingredients to blend smoothly. Pour into mason jar or tall glass.
    • Mix together your choice of dairy-free, plant-based, sugar-free yogurt with blue spirulina powder. Top triple berry smoothie layer.  Top with additional berries or edible flowers.
    • Enjoy immediately or seal and keep in airtight container or jar in the refrigerator for up to one day.

    Notes

For added fun flare, slice berries in half and place on the inside of the mason jar, then carefully fill in the smoothie and yogurt layers as you wish.
