white serving plate with grilled asparagus, garlic, and lemon wedge.

Sunshine and summer days call for dinners al fresco and firing up the grill.

When the temperatures rise, we love breaking out the grill. Some of our fave main dishes include Grilled Salmon with Lemon and Herbs, Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Grilled Bacon-Wrapped Scallops, and Filipino Pork BBQ Skewers.

If you're looking for a healthy, delicious summer side dish to go along with any of those mains, you'll love making Grilled Asparagus in Foil!

This grilled vegetable recipe is one to love!

    • You just need a few basic ingredients to make this dish.
    • The asparagus cooks up in 10 minutes.
    • It has a lovely balance of savory, acid, and salt.
    • You can customize the herbs to include your favorite flavors.
    • It's easy to double the recipe.

    🛒 Ingredient notes

ingredients in bowls on a checkered tablecloth, to make grilled asparagus in foil.

Asparagus - I prefer grilling thinner stalks of asparagus, but if you like thicker stalks you can certainly use those. Just be sure to adjust the cook time by a minute or so if you use thicker asparagus stalks. Be sure to trim the thick ends off.

Herbs - I love using basil and oregano on asparagus. You could also use dill, thyme, rosemary, or even a bit of tarragon.

    ✅ Step-by-step instructions

    1. In a medium bowl, mix together the olive oil, garlic, herbs, and salt and pepper.

    2. Place a few stalks of asparagus on the middle of each piece of foil.

    3. Brush the asparagus with the butter herb mixture.

    4. Place a few cubes of butter over the asparagus in each piece of foil. Squeeze the juice from one lemon wedge over the asparagus and place the remaining wedge next to the asparagus.

    5. Close the foil packets like an envelope, leaving a small opening to allow the air to circulate.

    6. Grill over medium-high heat for about 9 to 12 minutes, just until the asparagus turns a bright green.

    Serve with additional lemon wedges.

    👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

Does asparagus need to be blanched before grilling?

No. It does not need to be. However, you can blanch your asparagus before grilling if you wish. Some people believe blanching helps asparagus remain crispy during the grilling process.

How do you know when asparagus is done cooking?

Asparagus will take on a brighter green color when it's fully cooked. The spear tips will also start to take on some light browning or light char.

Do I have to trim the ends of asparagus before grilling?

We highly recommend trimming the ends, since they tend to be tough and woody -- they're not much fun to try to bite into! Trim the lighter-colored, woody asparagus stalks, about one to two inches off the ends, right before the stalks start to be fully green.

    🍽 Serving ideas

plate with grilled asparagus and lemon next to lemon slices and plate of grilled salmon with lemon and herbs, glass of white wine, forks, all on an aqua checkered tablecloth.

Grilled asparagus is a healthy and delicious side dish that goes well with so many different main dishes!

Try serving it with seafood, such as Grilled Salmon with lemon and herbs (as seen in the photo above), Easy Air Fryer Lobster Tails, or Grilled Seafood Boil Foil Packets. Or enjoy a vegetarian meal with Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese or Instant Pot Mushroom Risotto.

    🥂 Best wine pairings

Grilled asparagus pairs well with Sauvignon Blanc, which tends to have a similar flavor profile as asparagus.

    Notes

Asparagus: be sure to trim the thick woody ends off the stems of each asparagus stalk.
Cooking time: check in on the asparagus around the 9 minute mark. Thin asparagus spears will cook faster than thicker asparagus spears.

Made these with rosemary since that is what was in my garden and they were perfect. Paired them with roasted halibut. What a great and easy dinner.
