I’ve been making decorated chocolate-coated Oreo cookies for different holidays for years. Our Valentine’s Day Oreo Pops are always a big hit! And these Independence Day Oreo cookies are just as delicious and fun.

These red, white, and blue chocolate-covered cookies are beautiful additions to any 4th of July Dessert Board and sweet treats to wrap up any Independence Day BBQ or picnic.

🛒 Ingredient notes

Coconut oil (not pictured) – Adding one teaspoon of coconut oil to the white chocolate and the bowls of red and blue candy melts helps the chocolate melt and set silky smooth.

Oreos – You can use regular Oreo cookies or Double Stuffed. Just make sure your chocolate candy mold has circles that are deep enough to have the chocolate cover the tops if you’re using Double Stuffed cookies.

White chocolate – Use white chocolate bars made specifically for baking that can be found in the baking aisle of your grocery store. These melt smoothly. I recommend not using white chocolate chips, since those contain ingredients that help them keep their shape, so they do not melt as smoothly and are more likely to clump when heated up.

✅ Step-by-step instructions

  1. Break the white chocolate bars up into smaller pieces and place in a microwave-safe glass measuring cup or microwave-safe bowl. Microwave just until melted, then whisk smooth.
  2. Pour the melted white chocolate into the chocolate candy molds, filling them just over halfway full.

3A. Press Oreo cookies gently into each mold, allowing the melted white chocolate to cover the tops of the cookies.

3B. Place the chocolate-covered Oreos into the refrigerator to set for 10 minutes. TIP: If you place the molds onto a baking sheet (I’m using a quarter sheet baking pan here), that makes it easier to lift the mold into and out of the refrigerator.

4. While the cookies are setting, melt the red and blue candy melts in separate bowls along with one teaspoon of coconut oil each. Whisk smooth. Then place the melted candies into separate piping bags.

5A. Once the white chocolate has set and hardened, remove the cookies out of the refrigerator. Gently pop each one out of the mold.

5B. Place the cookies onto parchment paper so that they don’t stick when you decorate them.

6. Pipe the red and blue frosting onto the tops of the cookies and decorate as you wish. You can draw lines, stars and stripes, abstract patterns – whatever your heart desires! This is a great step that kids can help out with!

7. Add the finishing touches: while the frosting is still wet, top with red, white, and blue sprinkles of your choosing.

Allow the chocolate to set and the sprinkles to stick to the hardened frosting. Then store or serve.

Can I make these without a chocolate candy mold?

Yes! If you don’t have a chocolate candy mold, you can simply dunk the Oreo cookies into a bowl of melted white chocolate. Then set onto parchment paper to cool.

Can I make these in advance?

You can make these 4th of July Oreo cookies up to 2 days in advance before serving. If you make these in advance, I suggest storing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and then bringing out about 15 minutes before serving. This helps the white chocolate stay set during that time.

What’s the best way to store chocolate-covered Oreo cookies?

Store chocolate-covered Oreos in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Ingredients 

  • 12 ounces white chocolate
  • 3 teaspoons coconut oil, divided
  • 12 Oreo cookies
  • 1 cup red candy melts
  • 1 cup blue candy melts
  • 2 Tablespoons sprinkles

Instructions 

  • Melt the white chocolate plus one teaspoon of coconut oil until melted and whisk until smooth.
  • Pour the melted white chocolate into the candy molds, just over halfway full.
  • Place one Oreo cookie into each mold, allowing the white chocolate to cover the tops of the cookies. Pour more chocolate if needed to fully cover the tops of the cookies. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  • While the cookies are setting, melt the red candy melts with one teaspoon of coconut oil in one bowl and the blue candy melts with one teaspoon of coconut oil in another bowl. Whisk each until smooth and place them into separate plastic frosting bags.
  • When the white chocolate covered Oreos are set, remove them from the refrigerator and from the molds, then place them on parchment paper.
  • Pipe the red and blue melted candy melts over the cookies in any pattern you wish.
  • Top with sprinkles.
  • Allow to set on the parchment paper and then enjoy.

Notes

Makes 12 cookies. You can double the ingredients in this recipe with two candy molds to make 24 cookies.
Chocolate candy mold: Use chocolate candy molds that are large enough to set Oreo cookies into. 
Oreo cookies: you can use double-stuffed Oreo cookies or regular Oreo cookies.
