🛒 Ingredient notes

bowls of ingredients to make dog donuts on a blue background.

As always, we cook and bake homemade dog treats using ingredients that we know to be safe for our own dog and dogs in general. Every dog is different. Please be sure to consult your veterinarian if you are unsure about any ingredients, or before you introduce a new ingredient to your dog.

Some notes on a few of the ingredients in this recipe:

Flour – This recipe calls for whole wheat flour, which is safe for dogs who do not have a wheat allergy. Whole wheat flour helps make the dog donuts stay in their shape, while also providing dogs with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein.

Coconut oil – Be sure to measure out the coconut oil first using the measurement written in the recipe, and then melt in the microwave.

Peanut butter – Use creamy peanut butter – not chunky peanut butter – in this recipe.

Optional Peanut Butter Glaze If you’d like to make the optional peanut butter glaze, you will need an additional 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter plus 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.

✅ Step-by-step instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F. Have two non-stick donut pans and a spoon ready.

  1. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, or in a stand mixer, whisk together the mashed banana, egg, peanut butter, and melted coconut oil.
  2. Then mix in the flour, baking powder, and oats and whisk together just until combined. The mixture will be chunky (see photo 2b above).

3. Spoon the batter into the holes of 2 un-greased, non-stick donut pans, using your hands or the spoon to pat the batter down into shape. Fill each hole just about 3/4 of the way full.

4. Bake at 375°F for 12 to 15 minutes, just until the tops are slightly golden brown.

Optional: make the glaze

5. While the donuts are baking, make the glaze. In a large bowl, add the ½ cup peanut butter with the tablespoon of coconut oil. Microwave for 15-20 seconds, just enough to soften the peanut butter and almost melt the coconut oil. Remove from the microwave and whisk together until fully combined and smooth.

6. When the donuts are done baking, dip each one into the glaze and then rest on parchment paper or a cooling rack. If desired, top with mini dog biscuits or bacon crumbles.

👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

Can I make these without a donut pan?

Yes, you can! It might be a bit trickier, but you can use a muffin pan and place a ball of tin foil in the middle and spoon the batter in each muffin opening around the ball of foil. This creates smaller donuts, and you may need to adjust the baking times by a few minutes. If you make the smaller dog donuts this way, be sure to keep an eye on the donuts in the oven toward the end of the normal baking time to see if they need to stay in the oven longer or be pulled out sooner.

What’s the best way to store these homemade dog treats?

Allow the dog donuts to cool completely, then store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days.

Can I freeze these dog treats?

Yes, you can freeze these! Allow the dog donuts to cool completely, then store in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container in the freezer for up to two months.
