🛒 Ingredient notes

ingredients to make Big Mac Smash Tacos.
  • Ground meat – We use ground beef to keep it authentic with the Big Mac theme here. But you can easily use ground turkey instead.
  • Tortillas – We use mini flour tortillas, because a regular sized tortilla makes a HUGE burger taco.
  • Toppings – This recipe calls for classic burger toppings: pickles, lettuce, and sliced cheese.
  • Sauce – The sauce ingredients make a classic copycat Big Mac sauce that is irresistible. Save any extra and dip your fries in it!

Time saving tips and substitutions

This is already a recipe that you can whip up quickly, but here are some tips to help you save even more time. Plus, some substitution/addition ideas:

  • Use pre-sliced cheese instead of slicing a block of cheese yourself.
  • Buy a jar of pre-sliced pickles and a jar of relish instead of slicing dill pickles and chopping pickles.
  • For toppings, you could add or substitute dairy-free/vegan cheese, shredded cheese instead of sliced cheese, chopped tomatoes, and sliced red onions or chopped white onions.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. After that, they might get too soggy.

The best way is to reheat these big mac smash tacos in an air fryer or on a skillet. You could microwave them, but the tortilla may turn out too soggy or gummy.

🍽 Serving ideas

hands holding Big Mac Smash Tacos

I love these Big Mac Smash Tacos all on their own as a snack to get through the mid-day slump or for a satisfying easy weeknight dinner.

Keep the smashed theme going by serving them with some Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes.

Or serve them with a side salad like this tasty Charred Corn Salad or Cucumber Dill Salad.

🍷 🥂 Wine pairings

big mac smash tacos on a plate with a glass of wine.

This high-low meal deserves to be served with a glass of wine. And, it’s a versatile dish that pairs well with both white wine and red wine.

White wine pairing: the brininess and tanginess of the pickles pair well with a crisp white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling.

Red wine pairing: the hearty beef pairs well with a rich Syrah or a Tempranillo.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon finely chopped pickles
  • 1 Tablespoon white vinegar

Toppings

  • 8 mini tortillas
  • 8 slices cheese, American, cheddar, or dairy-free
  • 1 cup chopped lettuce, romaine or iceberg
  • 1 cup sliced dill pickles

Instructions

  • Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Form four round patties and set aside on a plate.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together all of the sauce ingredients: mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickles, white vinegar.
  • Take one shaped burger patty and smash it in an even layer onto one mini tortilla, bringing the meat out to the sides. It's okay if the meat goes a little past the edges of the tortilla, as it will shrink a bit when cooking. Repeat with remaining three patties and tortillas.
  • Heat olive oil on a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place one burger patty and tortilla, meat side down, and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until the meat is mostly cooked.
  • Flip over so the tortilla side is down, top with slice of cheese, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the cheese has melted and meat is fully cooked. Repeat with remaining three burgers and tortillas.
  • Top each with lettuce, pickles, and drizzly with sauce. Serve immediately, either folded up like a taco or serve open faced.

Notes

Makes 4-5 Big Mac smash tacos
Tip: make sure you press the beef out in an even layer so that it at least touches the edges of the tortilla rounds. The meat will seize up and shrink a bit as it cooks, so make sure you press it into a thin even layer. This will also make it easier to fold it up like a taco when it’s cooked.
Ingredient notes:
  • Use mini flour tortillas for the best result.
  • I use ground beef that is an 80/20 mix, which gives you big flavors still but less fat.
  • You can use your favorite sliced cheese. I use dairy-free slices and it’s just as delicious!
