Kitchen tools and equipment
For this recipe, you just need a few basic kitchen tools:
Food processor - You'll need a food processor to make these. If you do not have a food processor, see the recipe FAQs below for the alternative process.
Bowls - You will need two microwaveable bowls: one for the green chocolate melting wafers and one for the semi-sweet chocolate.
Spoon or cookie scoop - Use a spoon to scoop up the dough so you can form the truffles. If you want them to be about the same size, you can also use a small cookie scoop.
Forks - I find that using two forks when coating the truffle dough in the melted chocolate helps create a nice outer coating.
Baking sheet and parchment paper - Use a baking sheet or a large plate lined with parchment paper or wax paper to place the truffles on while they chill and set.
3-ingredient recipe
To make these mint oreo truffles, you only need three ingredients:
Mint Oreos - Use Mint Oreo cookies. These tend to be available year-round in most grocery stores. However, if you have trouble finding mint Oreos, you can always use regular Oreo cookies (not the double stuffed kind), then add a couple of drops of mint extract to the crumbled cookies when making the truffles.
Cream cheese - You'll need one 8-ounce package of cream cheese softened to room temperature. Take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you are ready to start making the truffles. Then cut the cream cheese into smaller cubes to help mix better with the cookies in the food processor.
Chocolate - Use semi-sweet chocolate baking bars, chopped and then melted.
Optional ingredients
Green chocolate - I like to use a mix of regular semi-sweet baking chocolate and green chocolate melting wafers. This way, there's lots of bright green color popping in the truffles!
Sprinkles - You can use your favorite sprinkles to decorate the tops of the truffles after they are coated and before the chocolate is set.
Step-by-step instructions
Exact measurements of ingredients and instructions are in the printable recipe card toward the bottom of this post. Here are some helpful tips to guide you as you make this recipe.
First: remember to take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before you start making these truffles. This way, the cream cheese is softened and will blend smoothly with the cookie crumbles to create an evenly distributed truffle.
Place the mint Oreo cookies in a large food processor and pulse until course crumbles.
Add the softened cream cheese, and pulse to combine the cream cheese and Oreo crumbles.
Roll into small round truffle balls and place on a quarter baking sheet, half baking sheet, or plate lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
While the truffles are chilling, melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments, whisking smooth until melted.
Remove the truffles from the refrigerator and dunk the truffles, one at a time, into the melted chocolate. Use two forks to gently roll the truffles back and forth to fully coat each truffle, then allow excess chocolate to drip back down into the bowl before setting each coated truffle onto either the same baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a new one.
Repeat until all of the truffles have been coated with chocolate. Chill in the refrigerator until set, at least 20 minutes.
Optional steps
- For green truffles: In a separate microwave-safe bowl, melt the green melting chocolate wafers in 30-second increments until melted, whisking smooth. Coat half of the chilled truffles with the green chocolate and allow to chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to eat! If you coat half of the truffles with the semi-sweet chocolate and half with the green chocolate, you should have some melted chocolate leftover to drizzle onto the tops of the coated & chilled truffles for extra decoration.
- If you want more mint flavor: add about ¼ teaspoon of mint extract or peppermint extract to the Oreo cookie & cream cheese mixture.
Recipe FAQs
No food processor? No problem!
Place the Oreo cookies into a large resealable plastic bag and seal. Use a roller to roll over the bag and crush the cookies, until they are all in crumbles. Place the crumbles into a large bowl.
To the bowl, add the softened cream cheese. Use either a hand mixer to cream the cream cheese into the cookie crumbles until well combined. If you don't have a hand mixer, you can use a wooden spoon or spatula and mix the ingredients together well.
Then continue with the remaining instructions.
You can use regular Oreo cookies. Then add ยผ teaspoon of mint extract or peppermint extract to the cream cheese/Oreo cookie mixture in the food processor.
Store chocolate truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
