What is a mojito?

The Mojito cocktail is a classic drink that is said to have been created in Cuba during the 16th century. This is when the island was under Spanish colonial rule. The exact details of its origin are not entirely clear, but the Mojito is said to have evolved from a medicinal drink called “El Draque,” named after Sir Francis Drake, the famous English explorer.

The classic mojito became a favorite among sailors, as the combination of lime and mint helped to combat scurvy and other illnesses that plagued seafarers during long voyages. Its refreshing taste and rejuvenating qualities made it a popular choice among the locals as well.

In the 20th century, the classic cocktail gained international recognition and became associated with Cuba’s vibrant culture and nightlife. Today, it is enjoyed by people all around the world as a classic and refreshing drink, showcasing the tropical flavors of Cuba.

🛒 Ingredient notes

bowls of ingredients to make a mango mojito.

The basic ingredients of this mango mojito recipe include:

  • rum – you can use a light rum, dark rum, or if you have mango rum, even better!
  • fresh lime juice
  • sugar
  • fresh mint leaves
  • soda water or club soda (not pictured)
  • mango syrup or sweet mango nectar

Add fresh fruit if you want even bigger fruity flavor in this mango cocktail. Simply add mango chunks to the glass and muddle them with the mint leaves.

Traditionally, the cocktail was made using a local Cuban rum called “aguardiente,” made from sugar cane juice. Over time, the drink gained popularity and variations emerged, with different types of rum and sweeteners being used.

Garnish with a sprig of mint and a luscious mango slice for a picture-perfect presentation.

Notes

Makes 1 mojito. Double the recipe to make two mojitos.
Mango syrup: you can buy mango syrup or make your own. Note: my mango syrup was very light in color; depending on the mango syrup you use, yours may turn out more orange than the mojito pictured here.
To make mango syrup:
  • Add 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup water, and 1 chopped fresh ripe mango to a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Once the water starts a low boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, until the mango is soft.
  • Using a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl, strain the mango mixture, pressing down to extract as much of the juice as possible into the bowl.
  • Allow the mixture to cool, then pour into a jar or bottle. Refrigerate any leftovers after making the mojito for up to 2 weeks.
