We bake a LOT of cookie recipes in our house. And for special occasions, we love to bake Lucky Charms cookies — like for St. Patrick’s Day or Easter. Spring really is the best time to make these fun Lucky Charms Cookies! But they are perfectly fun and festive year-round.

These chewy sugar cookies are so easy to make, and the addition of Lucky Charms marshmallows make them such a special treat!

🛒 Ingredient and substitution notes

Flour – This cookie recipe calls for all-purpose flour. I haven’t tested this recipe using any other flour, so if you do use any alternative, please let us know in the comments how it worked out!

Graham crackers – I really love the subtle added texture and flavor that crushed up graham crackers add to sugar cookies. If you prefer, you can simply leave these out. Or, try to crush up Lucky Charms cereal instead.

Butter and eggs – Make sure the unsalted butter and the eggs are both at room temperature before you start making these cookies. The butter needs to be softened enough to easily make an imprint when you press your thumb into it, but not too soft that it’s melty. Room temperature eggs mix more smoothly into Lucky Charms cookie dough batter.

Usual cookie ingredients – Rounding out the ingredients list are the usual suspects regularly found in cookie recipes. You’ll need baking soda, baking powder, kosher salt, vanilla extract, and granulated sugar.

Colorful marshmallows – the best marshmallows for this recipe are the small Lucky Charms marshmallows that come in the cereal box. They do sell a separate bag of just rainbow marshmallows (see photo above), but these are larger, fluffier, and melt and spread a lot more when baked in the cookies.

You can use either one. I like to use a combination of marshmallows from the cereal box and the package of Lucky Charms marshmallows. But for the tops of the cookies, I find the smaller marshmallows from inside the cereal box work best.

✅ Step-by-step instructions

Detailed instructions are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here’s a visual step-by-step of how to make these Lucky Charms cookies!

First: preheat your oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, finely crushed graham crackers, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, and using a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter for 1 minute until smooth and creamy.

3. Add the granulated sugar and light brown sugar and cream together with the butter until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

4. Beat in the egg and vanilla, just until combined.

5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in the stand mixer, jut until combined.

6. Gently fold in 1 cup of Lucky Charms marshmallows.

7. Use a medium or large cookie scoop to scoop out and form cookie dough balls. Place them about 2 inches apart from one another on each prepared baking sheet.

8. Bake at 350°F for 9-11 minutes for chewy cookies, just until cookies start turning a light golden brown with crisp edges and the centers look just slightly set. If you want a crispier cookie, add a minute or two of baking time.

9. Remove from the oven and immediately gently press a few extra Lucky Charms marshmallows on top of each cookie. Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Is it safe to eat raw cookie dough?

Since this cookie dough is made with regular flour and eggs, it is not advisable to eat the cookie dough raw. If you use heated flour and pasteurized eggs, it is generally safer to eat cookie dough, and some store-bought cookie dough is advertised as safe to eat raw. For example: Pillsbury ready to bake delicious cookie dough is made with heat treated flour and pasteurized eggs. They claim it is safe to eat raw or cooked. To be on the safe side, I would only eat homemade cookie dough after the cookies are fully baked.

What is the Lucky Charms Crumbl cookie?

The national cookie chain Crumbl Cookies has in the past made a Lucky Charms cookie. This cookie recipe is a similar copycat recipe, but does not include the cream glaze that the Crumble Cookie recipe contains.

What’s the best way to store cookies?

Allow the baked cookies to cool to room temperature. Then store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. After a few days, the marshmallows start to become stale.

Notes

Graham crackers: Alternatively, you could place 1 cup of Lucky Charms cereal (just the cereal part – NOT the marshmallows) into a food processor and use 1/2 cup of finely crushed cereal instead of the graham crackers. 
Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. 
Freezer instructions: Flash freeze cookies by placing them in one layer on a parchment paper or wax paper lined baking sheet. After the cookies are frozen, place into a freezer bag in single layers with parchment paper or wax paper dividing the layers. Freeze for up to two months.
