When it comes to Hood River restaurants, Broder East (Broder Øst) is unique. It offers adventurers a spot to fuel up with a hearty Swedish breakfast and lunch, in a beautiful Columbia River Gorge setting.
Hood River, Oregon is a destination spot for outdoor enthusiasts, windsurfers, craft beer lovers, wine afficionados, and Portland day trippers.
If you're looking for a spot to fuel up for a full day's adventure, be sure to check out Broder East, AKA Broder Øst - the fourth and latest outpost for the Portland-based Swedish restaurant group.
Broder Øst/Broder East
Tucked into the first floor of the Historic Hood River Hotel, is Broder Øst.
This fourth member of the Broder family of restaurants based in Portland, Oregon, Broder Øst continues the tradition of serving hearty, delicious Swedish cuisine.
Breakfast
Broder Øst serves breakfast and lunch daily, between 7am and 3pm. We stopped in here for breakfast, but I'll have a review of the lunch options that I enjoyed at Broder Soder (in SW Portland) in a future post.
One of the classic dishes that you must try at this Hood River restaurant is the order of Æbleskivers ($10), or Danish pancakes. These puffed dough balls are sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with lingonberry jam and house made lemon curd.
Eggs are also a plenty on the Broder menus. Above is a photo of the Lost Eggs ($13). Served in an adorable individual cast iron skillet, this dish consists of two eggs baked with ham, spinach and cream, and baked under a layer of parmesan panko crust.
The eggs at all Broder locations are done to perfection. You can order two baked eggs ($7) and add on a side of bacon, chicken smoked sausage, apples, or other side dish for an additional $2.
If you're looking for some greens with your breakfast, you can always add a side of their field greens salad to any dish for $5.
Broder: know before you go
I have been to the Southwest Portland location, Broder Soder, and love it as much as I enjoyed the Hood River restaurant location. Both are spacious and light-filled, with friendly staff and great service. I'd come here for family meals, for breakfast or lunch with a group of girlfriends. If you're a solo traveler, Broder restaurants are great spots for you, too. They've got the feel of a comfy casual cafe.
ATTIRE
All Broder locations are casual restaurants where casual attire such as t-shirts, jeans, and shorts are the norm. I found this to be especially true in Hood River, where people are likely to head off for a hike, go windsurfing, or ride bikes before or after their meal.
KID-FRIENDLY
All locations are very family friendly. Between the eggs, the breads and pastries, Danish pancakes, even my picky kids would find something they loved here.
GLUTEN-FREE
Gluten-free toast is available for an additional $1, just be sure to ask for it.
SPLIT CHECKS
If you are dining here with a group, they request that you limit payment to two cards per table.
