These homemade blueberry dog treats with blueberries and oats are easy to make. Delicious dog treats your furry best friend will love!

We love our dogs here at Urban Bliss Life! And we love to cook and bake. So it's no surprise that we also love making homemade dog treats for the special pups in our lives. If you're a dog lover or pet parents too, you'll love this recipe!

Frozen dog treats are especially popular among pups in the summertime, like these Frozen Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats and Watermelon Dog Treats. We also love to bake crunchy dog treats, like these Grain Free Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats. For super special occasions (who else celebrates their dog's birthdays like we do?), try our Homemade Dog Pretzels and Homemade Dog Donuts.

Our own dogs are our recipe testers and they love all of the homemade dog treat recipes that make it to the blog. And right now, our dog Ace (AKA Urban Bliss Dog) is loving these homemade blueberry dog treats!

    🌟 Why this recipe works

These homemade treats are great for so many reasons:

    • Easy to make - This is a super simple recipe with easy to follow instructions. And, I've got photos below to show you how to make this, step-by-step.
    • Simple ingredients - You'll love knowing exactly what you are feeding your dogs. Just simple, wholesome ingredients like fresh berries and oats.
    • Makes a lot - This dog treat recipe makes about 28 medium-sized dog treats (using our dog bone cookie cutter). This size is great for a large dog like ours (he's a black lab). But you can make even more if you use small cookie cutters, which would be great for small dogs and big dogs alike.
    • Can be frozen - We like to make a batch and freeze half of it for later.

    🛒 Ingredient notes

One of the best things about making your own dog treats at home is knowing exactly what goes into them. This easy recipe calls for wholesome, simple ingredients you can find at your local grocery store.

    • Flour - We use all-purpose flour. In addition to the dog treat dough, you'll need more flour for dusting the surface to roll out the dough. If you do try a different type of flour, like whole wheat flour or rice flour, you may need to adjust measurements and baking times. Please leave a comment below if you do use a different flour, and let us know how it went!
    • Old fashioned oats - I've experimented with using oat flour instead of processing the oats, and our dog seems to prefer this method of processing old fashioned oats. It gives the treats a little texture and added crunch.
    • Flax seed - We always have some ground flax seed in our house, and it's great to use as an egg substitute in this recipe. It helps bind the ingredients together and adds a little extra nutritional value.
    • Blueberries - Use fresh blueberries or frozen blueberries. If using frozen, there's no need to thaw them first. Simply add them to the mixture straight fro the freezer.
    • Coconut oil - Measure out the coconut oil first according to the recipe measurements, and them melt in the microwave. Make sure the oil has cooled a bit before adding it to the mixture.
    • Water - You can start with a little less than what the recipe calls for, then gradually add more as needed to get the dough to be thick enough to start forming a ball in the food processor and not be too sticky.

    ✅ Step-by-step instructions

You'll find the full ingredient list with detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. But here's a photo step-by-step guide to help you bake these dog treats.

First, preheat your oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.

    • In a food processor, add the oats and pulse until fine crumbles, the size and texture of oat flour. (See notes if you have oat flour)
    • Add the flour and flaxseed, and pulse until well blended, about 30 seconds.
    • Add the melted & cooled coconut oil, and pulse to combine. Then add the water and pulse just until combined.
    • Add the blueberries and pulse just until combined and the dough starts to form into a ball, about 30 seconds. Remove the bowl from the food processor, carefully remove the blade.
    • Lightly dust a clean countertop or other large, clean, flat surface with flour. Turn out the dough onto the surface and shape into a ball.
    • Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it is even and about ¼" to ⅙" thick.
    • Using a dog-themed cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place the cutout dough onto the prepared baking pan.
    • Bake at 350°F for 22-28 minutes, just until the edges are slightly golden brown and the centers are cooked through.
    • Allow to cool at room temperature on a wire rack before feeding to your dog or storing.

    👩🏻‍🍳 Dog treat recipe FAQs

Are blueberries safe for dogs to eat?

Yes, it is safe for dogs to eat blueberries. They are rich in antioxidants and packed with fiber, making them a healthy snack for dogs and humans alike.

What's the best way to store homemade dog treats?

Store these blueberry treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Can I freeze these blueberry dog treats?

Yes! Allow the treats to cool down, then place them in a single layer in a freezer bag and freeze for up to two months. If you have more than a single layer, place a sheet of parchment paper between the layers to prevent the treats from sticking to one another.

    Kitchen tools and equipment

Ready to make this recipe? Here are the kitchen tools and equipment you'll need:

    • Food processor - Use a food processor to pulse the oats and combine all of the ingredients.
    • Dog cookie cutter - These are my favorite cookie cutters to use for homemade dog treats.
    • Baking sheet - You'll need two baking sheets, or you can use one baking sheet and work in batches.
    • Parchment paper - Use parchment paper to line your baking sheets. This prevents the treats from sticking to the pans, helps them bake more evenly, and also makes for easier clean up.

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.
    • In a food processor, add the oats and pulse until fine crumbles, the size and texture of oat flour. (See notes if you have oat flour)

    • Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough until it is even and about ¼" to ⅙" thick.
    • Using a dog-themed cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place the cutout dough onto the prepared baking pan, leaving about one inch between each treat. Gather extra dough, re-roll on the floured surface, and continue to cut out shapes until you've used up all the dough.
    • Bake at 350°F for 22-28 minutes, just until the edges are slightly golden brown and the centers are cooked through.
    • Allow to cool at room temperature before feeding to your dog or storing.

    Notes

    Makes approximately 28 dog treats
Oats: if you have oat flour, you can substitute that for the oats and simply add it to the food processor. The dog treats won't have the same texture, but should bake up in the same amount of time.
Coconut oil: Measure out coconut oil in its solid form according to the recipe measurements, then microwave for 20 to 30 seconds to melt. Allow the oil to cool at room temperature before adding to the batter.
Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to one week. If you want to store them for longer than that, you can place in a freezer bag or other freezer safe container for up to 3 months.
