    🛒 Ingredient notes

bowls of ingredients to make red, white, and blue trail mix.

Here are the basic ingredients to make this red, white, and blue trail mix recipe:

    • Nuts - I use peanuts, but you can also use almonds, walnuts, pecans, or cashews.
    • M & M candies- If you can find red, white, and blue M & M candies, use those. If not, just use the red and blue M & Ms from a regular pack of M & Ms.
    • Marshmallows - Mini marshmallows add a soft, pillowy, sweetness to the trail mix.
    • Pretzels - I love adding white chocolate-covered pretzels or yogurt covered pretzels for additional crunch and white color to the patriotic theme. But you can also use regular mini pretzels or pretzel sticks.
    • Dried cranberries - These add color, a little sweetness, chewy texture, and some healthy nutrients and antioxidants.

You can also mix it up by adding any of these optional other ingredients: raisins, Rice Chex cereal, freeze-fried blueberries, freeze-dried strawberries, mini licorice bites, red, white, and blue sprinkles, or a drizzle of red or blue melted candy melts.

    ✅ Step-by-step instructions

You'll find detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. But here are two step-by-step photos to show you just how easy it is to make this patriotic treat!

    That's it! Enjoy!

    👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

bowl of red, white, and blue trail mix.
How do I keep my trail mix from going stale?

Store Properly: Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to prevent the nuts from going rancid and the dried fruit from becoming too sticky.
Portion Wisely: Only take out what you need at a time, so the main batch stays sealed and fresh.

    Is trail mix healthy?

It can be. Trail mix is typically a healthy snack, rich in protein, healthy fats, and fiber. However, it can be calorie-dense, especially if it contains a lot of chocolate or candy. Choose unsalted nuts, minimal added sugars, and balance the mix with dried fruits and whole grains for a healthier version.

What's the best way to store trail mix?

The best storage for trail mix is to store it in ziplock bag or airtight container at room temperature. It will remain fresh for up to 2 to 4 weeks.

Can I store trail mix in the refrigerator?

Absolutely! Store in an airtight container or in resealable plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to one month.

    🍽 Serving ideas

We love serving this red, white, and blue trail mix along with other red, white, and blue foods.

Whether you're celebrating Independence Day, Memorial Day weekend, election night, try serving it along with one of these tasty treats:

    • Red, White, and Blue Fruit Pizza
    • Mixed Berry Galette
    • 4th of July Oreos
    • Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Puppy Chow
    • Patriotic Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Bark

    🍸🥂 Cocktail and wine pairings

Keep the red, white, and blue theme going by serving a Blue Wave Cocktail at your patriotic party!

If serving wine: pair with a Pinot Noir or a Shiraz.

Pinot Noir’s lighter body and red fruit notes provides a nice balance to trail mix. Especially with a sweet and salty trail mix like this that has a mix of chocolate and nuts.

Shiraz, with its spicy, fruity profile, complements both the sweet chocolate and salty pretzels, creating a balanced pairing.

    🍳 Kitchen tools and equipment

You only need a few basic kitchen tools to make this recipe:

    • Large mixing bowl - You'll need a large bowl to mix the ingredients together
    • Spatula or Spoon: Use a silicone spatula or wooden spoon to stir the ingredients together.
    • Ziplock bags - You can store the patriotic campaign trail mix in large resealable plastic bags.
