Making homemade biscuits from scratch is easier than you might think. I've got a classic Buttermilk Biscuit recipe on the blog if you want to bake them the traditional way.

But if you want an even faster way to a light and fluffy homemade biscuit, try this Air Fryer Biscuit recipe!

    🌟 Why this recipe works

air fryer biscuits stacked on a plate.

If you've wondered "can I put biscuits in the air fryer?" The answer is a resounding: yes, you can! And, once you make biscuits from scratch in the air fryer, you may never go back to baking them!

Here are just a few reasons I think you'll love cooking biscuits this way.

    • You only need six ingredients to make these biscuits.
    • All of the ingredients are simple, easy-to-find ingredients that you probably already have in your house.
    • It only takes about 25 minutes to make air fryer biscuits from start to finish.
    • These turn out soft and fluffy, perfect for enjoying on their own with a pat of butter. Or, slice in half and use as the bread for breakfast sandwiches!

    🛒 Ingredient notes

bowls of ingredients to make air fryer biscuits.

Butter - You'll need butter two ways. The first is cold and cubed, to cut into the flour. This is what creates those delectable buttery pockets of buttery. Make sure the butter is very cold, straight from the fridge. The second is you'll need melted butter to brush onto the biscuits

Buttermilk - If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to milk and letting it sit for 5 minutes. Then use in the recipe as you would the buttermilk.

    ✅ Step-by-step instructions

Line air fryer baskets or trays with parchment paper.

whisk with dry baking ingredients in a green bowl.
hands cutting cold butter into biscuit dough.
    1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

    2. Using your hands or a pastry cutter, cut in the 3 tablespoons of cubed cold butter until the dough is crumbly.

buttermilk poured into a well of dry ingredients to make biscuits.
hands shaping biscuit dough on a marble countertop.
hands and rolling pin rolling biscuit dough flat on a marble counter.

    3. Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon, gently fold the dry mixture in with the buttermilk until just combined.

    4. On a floured surface, form the dough into a disc and then roll out until it’s about 1-inch thick.

hand holding a biscuit cutter over biscuit dough on a marble counter.
four biscuit rounds placed in an air fryer basket.

    5. Use a 2-inch round cookie or pastry cutter and cut out 8 biscuits.

    6. Place biscuits on the parchment paper-lined air fryer baskets and air fry at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes.

    👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

air fryer biscuits stacked on a plate.
What's the difference between scones and biscuits?

Scones and biscuits are often seen as the same, but the main difference is that scones are made with eggs and biscuits are not.

Why did my biscuits turn out tough?

The most common misstep that happens with biscuits is overworking the dough. Biscuit dough only needs to be folded over a few times and then rolled out. If you overwork the dough, you risk the dough overdeveloping gluten, making the biscuits tough.

Another possible culprit: old baking powder. Make sure you use baking powder that is still fresh, otherwise the dough may not rise and may turn out tough.

What's the best way to store biscuits?

Biscuits are best enjoyed as soon as they are done cooking. However, you can store biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

    🍽 Serving ideas

air fryer biscuits stacked on a plate.

These air fryer biscuits are delicious on their own, with a slab of butter. But they are also amazing to use as the sandwich bread for breakfast sandwiches!

Slice a biscuit in half, then place a breakfast sausage, scrambled egg, and cheese for a tasty breakfast sandwich.

You can also serve these with gravy for a classic biscuits and gravy combo for breakfast or brunch.

For lunch or dinner, serve these biscuits as a side dish. They're tasty accompaniments to Shrimp and Sausage Pasta, Instant Pot Chicken Noodle Soup, or Seafood Jambalaya.

    🍳 Kitchen tools and equipment

    Equipment

    • 1 Air Fryer

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3 teaspoons baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter, divided (4 Tablespoons cold butter, cut into cubes + 2 Tablespoons butter melted and slightly cooled)
    • ¾ cup buttermilk

    Instructions

    • Line air fryer baskets or trays with parchment paper.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Using your hands or a pastry cutter, cut in the 3 tablespoons of cubed cold butter until the dough is crumbly.
    • Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon, gently fold the dry mixture in with the buttermilk until just combined.
    • On a floured surface, form the dough into a disc and then roll out until it’s about 1-inch thick.
    • Use a 2-inch round cookie or pastry cutter and cut out 8 biscuits.
    • Place biscuits on the parchment paper-lined air fryer baskets and air fry at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes.
    • Melt the remaining butter and brush the tops of the cooked biscuits with butter.
    • Optional: sprinkle a few flakes of flaky sea salt on the top of each biscuit.

    Notes

Makes 6 - 8 biscuits, depending on how thick you cut the biscuits.
Buttermilk: If you don't have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to ¾ cup of milk (whole, 2%, almondmilk or soy milk works). Let it sit for 5 minutes, then stir and use in the recipe.
    Tips:
-Do not overwork the dough. The more you work the dough, the more gluten develops, and the tougher your biscuits will be.
-Use fresh baking powder. Often if the dough doesn't rise well, it's due to older baking powder.
Storage: Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Or, freeze biscuits in a freezer bag for up to one month.
