In an industry that has seen a boom in new business and interesting mergers, there's something satisfying and comforting about watching a longtime classic like Ponzi Winery experience continued growth and emerge with an exciting new space.
Since 1970, Ponzi wines have been a staple in Oregon restaurants, homes, and tourist itineraries. Last month, Ponzi opened its newest location: Ponzi Vineyards Winery in Sherwood, Oregon. As Cellar Club members, my husband and I were invited to a grand opening event on opening day of the new space, which sits atop the beautiful Chehalem Mountains.

🍾 Ponzi winery grand opening
Along with other Cellar Club members, we sipped on winemaker Luisa Ponzi's 2008 Cin Cin, a limited batch Brute Rose which was perfect for the warm summer evening. We learned about the new space from Founder Dick Ponzi and his daughter and Director of Marketing, Maria Ponzi, and toured the expansive facility & beautiful new tasting room.
FOODIE MOMENT: see that appetizer above? If you're ever hosting a wine event, you can't go wrong with a classic crostini with smoked salmon, creme fraiche, caviar, and chives. It is, in my mind, the perfect classic entertaining dish.
🍇 New tasting room
If you've been to Ponzi's Historic Estate in Beaverton, you are already familiar with the care the Ponzi family takes into every detail of each space they create. The newest Ponzi Vineyard Winery was designed by Brett Folgelstrom of Fogelstrom Design Build Co., who is also Maria Ponzi's husband. The space includes the wine making facility, administrative offices, and the tasting room.
The interior of the Ponzi Winery and Tasting Room space is sleek, modern, and oozes of a historic richness that complements the elegance, sophistication, and creativity of Ponzi wines. High ceilings, mixes of concrete and wood, contemporary furniture, expansive guest space both inside and out, and beautiful glass displays featuring momentos of the Ponzi past give the new Ponzi tasting room a cozy atmosphere, making you feel as though you should really take it all in and stay a while.
The new tasting room features tableside wine service within the sleek interior, outside on the terrace, or on the patio overlooking the two Bocce ball courts.
The patio is my favorite spot. It has a serene European feel to it. I could have sat there all day.
It is, simply put, the perfect spot to spend a sunny summer afternoon. After all, this is your view:
In the new tasting room, you have the option to purchase an assorted antipasti plate for $15, in addition to the expansive wine selection.
🍷 The wines
When an out-of-towner has never experienced the delicious difference of Oregon Pinot Noirs, I suggest the 2009 Ponzi Pinot Noir Reserve or the 2010 Ponzi 10th Anniversary Pinot Noir Reserve. Ponzi Pinots taste the way Oregon Pinots should, in my opinion.
Their white wine selection is equally fantastic. The 2012 Pinot Gris is a wonderful wine for summer picnics, and is very affordable at $17 per bottle. At $20 per bottle, the Ponzi 2012 Pinot Blanc is also an excellent summer wine. In fact, after the cellar club formal gathering, my husband and I ordered a bottle of the Ponzi 2012 Pinot Blanc and lounged on the patio, enjoying the view from the sunny north slope.
