Located about 90 minutes east of Bordeaux in France’s Dordogne region, Bergerac is bursting with small-town French charm. And it’s home to a host of excellent restaurants serving up classic regional dishes. Here’s our guide to the best Bergerac restaurants.

The medieval city of Bergerac, France lies at the heart of the Dordogne. This region is named for the river that winds its way through southwestern France. We spent about a week in Bergerac after spending a week in Bordeaux.

Filled with charming squares, winding narrow streets, and gorgeous architecture, we fell in love with the sweet charm of Bergerac. It’s often used as a home base for travelers looking to explore the region and the surrounding small towns and villages.

One reason is because it serves up all the city amenities you need, including a range of excellent restaurants specializing in local cuisine and ingredients, like duck, foie gras, and truffles. And many offer a fine dining experience without the pretense, or the super high prices.

About this guide

You find almost any kind of cuisine in Bergerac, from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern to Indian and American. But our guide centers on restaurants that focus on local Perigord dishes this part of France is known for.

So we’ve narrowed it down to three of the best, each of which we dined at during a recent trip to the area.

Fancy eating outdoors alongside the beautiful Dordogne river? Then Quai Savette may be the perfect option.

Enjoy an upscale menu and extensive wine list in the unassuming La Table du Marche, in the heart of the city.

Or duck into L’Imparfait nestled in one Bergerac’s small side streets, where you’ll enjoy gorgeously prepared dishes and impeccable service.

And as a bonus, we take a look at a pair of the city’s best boulangeries, where you can find everything from fresh-baked baguettes and croissants to decadent eclairs and macarons.

Quai Salvette

Vibe: Located right across the street from the lazily flowing Dordogne River, Quai Salvette is one of the best places in Bergerac for outdoor dining. In fact, more than one person we met mentioned it as one of their favorite summer spots to have an apéro, a pre-dinner cocktail and a bite to eat.

The atmosphere is casual and inviting. And if you happen to snag a table next to the vines that grow alongside the terrace, you almost feel like you’re in a secluded oasis. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

You can choose from either an à la carte or fixed menu, consisting of three courses. And they offer a selection of local or regional wines by the glass or bottle.

What to order: Go for the fixed menu. Ours consisted of salmon tartare, duck confit (tender duck leg slowly cooked in its own fat—so good!), and a fruit crumble for dessert. All for about $30 per person.

Address:
14 Quai Salvette
24100 Bergerac, France

Hours:
Tue – Sat: 9:30am – Midnight
Sun: 9:30am – 4pm

La Table Du Marche

Vibe: French for “market table,” La Table du Marche transforms market ingredients into simple yet sophisticated dishes. The relaxed, city center vibe lends itself to long, leisurely dinners where you can savor each course while you watch the bustle of Bergerac pass you by.

What to order: Start with the thinly sliced sashimi of locally caught fish, then move on to the tender and hearty duck breast. Ours was perfectly juicy inside with delicately crispy skin.

Address:
21 Pl. Louis de la Bardonnie
24100 Bergerac, France

Hours:
Tue – Sat: 12pm – 1:30pm; 7pm – 8:30pm

L’Imparfait

Vibe: L’Imparfait offers a feel of fine dining with impeccable service, yet it’s still casual enough that it doesn’t feel stuffy. Tucked away in a narrow alley in the center of Bergerac, it’s an ideal dinner spot if you’re looking for classic regional dishes with an elevated flair.

What to order: Begin with the scallops and prawns with basil oil served over a bed of vegetables. It was fresh and delicious! For your main course, try the French beef filet with local fois gras, a dish this region is famous for.

Address:
8 Rue des Fontaines
24100 Bergerac, France

Hours:
Daily: 12pm – 1:30pm; 7pm – 9pm

Boulangerie Celeste

France is known for its excellent bakeries, and there are no shortage of them in Bergerac. Two of our favorites are Boulangerie Celeste and Boulangerie Banette.

Boulangerie Celeste is located in a quiet part of town a few minutes outside the city center. But when we went, this small neighborhood bakery was teeming with customers.

After we got up to the counter, we loaded up on freshly made eclairs (both chocolate and violet!), Paris Brest, and a baguette for the next day’s breakfast. At around $5 a pastry, this isn’t the cheapest bakery in town, but it’s among the best.

Boulangerie Banette

Another can’t-miss Bergerac bakery stop is Boulangerie Banette. This artisan bakery focuses more on bread than pastries, but the pastries they do offer are super tasty. We got some coffee and chocolate eclairs here, along with a pain au chocolat and a chocolate tart. Hey, we love chocolate!

And the prices can’t be beat. Our haul of four items came in at around $10.
