Today is Bliss Dog's 7th birthday!!! I can't even believe it. Just like with kids, dogs grow up so fast!
Bliss Dog came home with us after an unexpected and somewhat spontaneous trip to a local shelter just a few months after we lost another beloved dog. You can read the full story of how Bliss Dog came into our lives in this post.
He's been with us for four and a half years, and is truly a member of our family. We all love him SO much.
And so yes, we celebrate his birthday each year. The kids, especially my son who is perhaps the biggest dog lover on the planet, get super excited about celebrating his birthday. While he doesn't have a full blown dog birthday party anymore, he does get spoiled with homemade dog treats, presents, and tons and tons of extra love and attention on his special day.
I mean, seriously: look at that face. He is the best, especially with the kids, and we are so lucky to have him in our lives!
Grain-Free Dog Treats
Since he came home with us, we've also learned from his vet that Bliss Dog needs to have a grain-free diet. He doesn't do well on foods that contain grains, so we pony up and pay premium for the good stuff.
Over the holidays, the kids and I made these Peanut Butter Pumpkin Grain-Free Dog Treats. We made them for Bliss Dog, and to our friends who were coming over for our annual New Year's Day Pajama Party who have dogs. This homemade dog treat recipe is so simple!
How to make grain-free dog treats
Homemade dog treats are as simple as making the easiest homemade cookies!
- The dough comes together quickly in one bowl.
- Then, simply roll out and cut into fun shapes using your favorite cookie cutters. I love these dog bone cookie cutters, used for the ones in these pics.
- Finally, bake these dog treats in the oven at 350°F for 13-15 minutes.
How long do homemade dog treats keep?
These homemade grain-free dog treats keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. You could also freeze them for up to one month.
Homemade Dog Treat Gifts
We like to give these as gifts to friends who have dogs! This recipe makes so many, that it's easy to keep some for our dog and give some to his pup pals.
We pack these adorable dog treats in mason jars with striped baker's twine. Then I wrapped some dog-themed washi tape (because yes, I am STILL obsessed with washi tape and use it on everything!). Finally we add a cute dog-themed gift tag.

Bliss Dog honestly LOVES them! And, he doesn't eat just anything that falls to the ground or weird things outside. So I know they must be pretty good for him to constantly want to gobble up. As his dog mom, I can feel good knowing they are grain-free and won't hurt his tummy. I love knowing all of the ingredients put into these treats are healthy, real ingredients that are safe for him to eat!
Grain-Free Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2½ cup coconut flour
- ½ cup organic peanut butter
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup coconut oil melted then slightly cooled
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Roll dough out gently onto a cutting board dusted lightly with additional coconut flour, or onto a rolpat. Roll out to about ¼ - ½ inch thick.
- Cut out shapes using your preferred cookie cutters.
- Transfer gently to a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes. Treats should have a slightly golden color around the edges.
- Cool on cookie sheets before serving.
- May be stored in airtight containers for up to three weeks.

Made these last night. Turned out ok, but they aren't crunchy. Not sure what I did wrong. They are brown so I know I cooked them enough. Any ideas?

Thanks for trying them, Shelli! Hmm... if they are brown and cooked but too soft for you, it could be the type of baking sheet you used. Light colored pans bake food more evenly, whereas darker pans tend to brown the edges & outside faster, which may lead to a softer treat. They may also turn out softer if you have an air-cushioned baking sheet. It also helps bake treats evenly if you make sure your oven is fully pre-heated before placing the treats in. Hope that helps! I was a little skeptical to bake these but I gave it a shot. The biscuits came out perfectly. The only trouble that I could see that may have happened with failed bakers was if you didn't let the oil cool. I used all natural peanut butter which tends to be oily and I didn't have any trouble. The dough doesn't roll out like sugar cookies, but with a gentle roll it's all good.

My dog was drooling as I made these & absolutely loved them when they were done!! ? Didn't have coconut flour on hand so I ground oats into oat flour and used that. Followed everything else in the recipe to a T! However I also found that the dough was too loose, was more like a cake batter consistency. I did measure the coconut oil hard before melting, however it was still loose. Ended up adding more oat flour till it became more dough like. (Approx. double what the recipe called for) Still wasn't "pizza dough" consistency like people are looking for, however it could be rolled and delicately worked with. Rolled it out inbetween two pieces of plastic wrap on a cutting board & used a heart cookie cutter. Came out wonderful <3 ? My dog and I thank you for this post!!

This is great! Bliss dog is beautiful, and deserves to be celebrated! I just threw a big dog party for my Bullmastiff who just turned 10. That's big for that breed! I've a hard time finding recipes for homemade dog treats that didn't have regular flour in them, so thank you. Pinning!

Thanks for the recipe. Our dog gets car sick and the vet recommended mixing his morning meal with a bit of pureed pumpkin. Maybe this will work instead - easier and not as messy!

Making dog treats is one great way to ensure allergic or food-sensitive dogs don't get anything they're not supposed to have. Unfortunately our mutt is allergic to pretty much everything except most vegetables and fish, so we can't give him these, but they are adorable!
